Thiruvananthapuram: The Cinema Collective, housed within the Department of English and Cultural Studies, School of Humanities and Performing Arts, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), hosted the formal release of the book “P. Padmarajan and Middle Cinema in Malayalam”, co-edited by Dr. Arya Aiyappan and Dr. Biju Itukkapparakkal, on August 3rd, 2025.
The event, which celebrated the legacy of legendary filmmaker and writer P. Padmarajan, witnessed the presence of prominent personalities from the Malayalam cultural and cinematic landscape.
Renowned Malayalam film actor Mr. Ashokan, who has acted in several films directed by Padmarajan, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Reputed historian and social critic Dr. J. Devika delivered the Keynote Address, providing insightful reflections on the cultural importance of Padmarajan’s works and their continuing relevance in contemporary Kerala society.
Ms. Radhalakshmi Padmarajan, writer and wife of the late filmmaker, attended the function as a Guest of Honour, offering personal and poignant memories of Padmarajan’s literary and cinematic journey. Celebrated film critic and director Mr. Vijayakrishnan also joined as a Guest of Honour, sharing critical perspectives on Padmarajan’s contribution to the evolution of middle cinema in Malayalam.
The book, published by Bloomsbury International, is expected to serve as a valuable resource for film enthusiasts, scholars, and researchers interested in Malayalam cinema, particularly the unique space occupied by “middle cinema” — a bridge between mainstream commercial films and the more experimental, art-house genre.
With his infectious enthusiasm and engaging personality from Texas, Hari Namboodiri brought his charismatic presence to the event as anchor, making it a memorable event.
The event was well attended by students, faculty members, film lovers, and cultural critics, all of whom paid rich tributes to the timeless legacy of P. Padmarajan.
